Augmentin is prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections in the lower respiratory tract, otitis media, sinusitis, skin infections, and urinary tract infections.
Augmentin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that eliminates bacteria. It is effective against a variety of aerobic (those that thrive in oxygen) and anaerobic (those that thrive without oxygen) gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, including some strains that produce beta-lactamase (the enzyme that breaks down penicillin). The Clavulanate Potassium in this medication enhances Augmentin's resistance to the activity of bacterial beta-lactamases. This medication is utilized for conditions such as pneumonia, as well as other infectious diseases affecting the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, urogenital systems, and infections that occur post-surgery, among others.
Avoid using this medication if you are allergic to any penicillin antibiotics, have liver or kidney failure, or mononucleosis.
Do not take Augmentin if you have an allergy to its components or any other penicillin antibiotics, if you have infectious mononucleosis, a history of liver issues, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) linked to Augmentin usage.
Possible side effects include dyspepsia, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, nausea, vomiting, liver function disturbances, hepatitis, jaundice due to bile retention, vaginal itching, and allergic reactions (hives, rashes, swelling). Caution is advised for patients with liver failure. Augmentin is generally not recommended for pregnant women (particularly in the third trimester) and those breastfeeding.
Treatment with Augmentin and other antibiotics may disrupt the normal bacterial flora of the colon, leading to an overgrowth of C. difficile, which can cause pseudomembranous colitis. The gout medication probenecid may slow down the excretion of Augmentin via the kidneys, increasing the risk of toxicity.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose. Do not take an extra dose to make up for the one you missed.
If you suspect you have taken too much Augmentin and experience symptoms like nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, skin rash, drowsiness, or hyperactivity, seek immediate medical attention.
